Instead of burning fossil fuels, like oil or propane, air source heat pumps operate on the same principle as a refrigerator, using a refrigerant cycle, powered by electricity, to move heat and to keep your home at a comfortable temperature year-round.
Since heat pumps are an electric appliance, when you add one to your home, you may see your energy usage shift. Depending on your current heating and cooling situation, your electricity usage may go up--but you may save in other areas.

If your home has ductwork for heating and cooling, a centrally-ducted heat pump may be the ideal solution. With a ducted heat pump, you can utilize your home’s existing ductwork while gaining both heating and cooling for your home.

Ductless heat pumps, also known as mini-splits, are an efficient alternative for electrically heated homes, areas where ductwork does not exist or cannot be installed, and homes with open floor plans. Because they are fairly easy to install, installation costs are low compared to other heating and cooling systems.
Ductless heat pumps have three main parts:
- An indoor unit that mounts on the floor, wall, or ceiling
- An outdoor unit that typically sits on the ground
- A remote control that operates the inside unit
The indoor and outdoor units are connected by small refrigerant lines, which are installed through a very small hole in the wall. The units are smaller than conventional air conditioning equipment and less intrusive.

Air Source Heat Pump Incentives
To help you make the switch, you can receive incentives up to $15,000 per home for purchasing eligible heat pumps.
Heat pump incentives are offered based on system size (tonnage) and are available at two stages of your heat pump project:
- Step 1: Work with a participating Energize CT Heat Pump Installer to receive an instant discount up to $500 per ton when qualified equipment is purchased from a participating distributor on your behalf. Speak to your contractor to ensure your instant discount is being applied.
- Step 2: Complete your installation and claim an additional $1,000 per ton energy optimization rebate on systems used to replace oil, propane, or electric resistance (baseboard) as a primary heating source. Claim your rebate online or submit a completed Air Source Heat Pump Energy Optimization Rebate Form by mail.
With combined incentives, the average Connecticut home is eligible to receive more than $6,000 when upgrading to air source heat pumps. Review eligibility requirements below.
- Account holder must be a residential electric customer of Eversource or United Illuminating
- Equipment must be listed on the Energize CT Heat Pump Qualified Product List
For additional energy optimization rebates:
- Equipment must be installed by a contractor participating in the Energize CT Heat Pump Installer Network
- Equipment must replace oil, propane, or electric baseboard as the primary heating system. If an existing oil or propane system will be left in place, an integrated control must be installed
