Before installing a gas furnace or boiler, consider a centrally ducted heat pump. Centrally ducted heat pumps work with your existing ductwork to both heat and cool your home. They use a relatively small amount of electricity to harvest a lot of heat from the atmosphere or ground. Then they bring the sun’s warmth into your living space during cold months—and to your faucets year-round. During the summer they efficiently cool your home by removing hot air from it and they do it without combustion or fossil fuels, so they’re clean and green.

Compared to heating with oil, propane, or electric baseboard, heat pumps are the lowest cost fuel source. They might cost more upfront for installation and increase your household electricity bill, but you’re likely to save money in the long run because they don’t use expensive fossil fuels to run. Plus, Energize Connecticut offers cash incentives and low-interest subsidized financing to help pay for installing a heat pump.

Heat pumps also significantly reduce a big cost that is an increasing concern in Connecticut: the escalating cost of climate change. Learn more about the benefits of heat pumps and use the Clean Heating & Cooling Calculator on our Clean Heating and Cooling page to see what a heat pump would mean for your home’s budget—and how much it would reduce your carbon emissions.

Additional Details

In most homes, heating is the single biggest energy expense. Replacing your old furnace, boiler or boiler circulator pump with new high-efficiency heating equipment can take a bite out of your energy costs, plus make your home more comfortable.

A furnace or boiler's efficiency is measured by annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) which tells you what percent of fuel is converted to useful heat for your home. The higher the AFUE, the more heat you get for your heating dollar. Older furnace and boiler systems have efficiencies in the range of 56 to 70 percent. High-efficiency heating systems achieve efficiencies as high as 97 percent, converting nearly all the fuel to useful heat for your home.

For more information on high efficiency systems, please visit the U.S. Department of Energy website. The site also features an easy-to-use table showing what you could save when you upgrade to an energy-efficient system.

Before you invest in a new furnace, boiler, or boiler circulator pump, make your home as energy efficient as possible. Improving insulation and sealing air leaks to stop heat loss may allow you to purchase a smaller, less expensive heating system. Home Energy Solutions can help you identify and make energy-saving improvements that are right for your home.

How We Help

We can help with instant discounts of $35 to $750 from the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund to offset the cost of installing a qualifying high-efficiency heating system.

Saving is easy with an instant discount from Participating DistributorsStep 1

Contact your HVAC contractor to find out if a high-efficiency natural gas furnace, natural gas boiler or a boiler circulator pump makes sense for your home. Ask if they have done an efficiency test on your existing system and how it rated.

Instant discounts are available for customers of the following utilities:

Eversource       UI           CNG

The Southern Connecticut Gas Company (SCG) is currently experiencing a strong demand for the residential energy efficiency programs leading to program budgets being severely constrained. Due to the increase in program activity, at the close of business on June 16, 2022, SCG will no longer offer incentives for natural gas boilers, furnaces and water heaters sold in SCG territory. Effective June 17, 2022, the instant discount currently offered upstream by distributors will no longer be offered to customers in the SCG territory.

We look forward to resuming program activity in SCG territory once funding becomes available in 2023.

Please note this does not impact Eversource Gas or Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG).
