On Tuesday, July 12, Milford Mayor Benjamin Blake, city officials, members of the Milford Energy Advisory Board, representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and United Illuminating Company (UI) gathered at Milford City Hall to recognize the recent ENERGY STAR® certification of two municipal buildings.
City Hall and Parson’s Government Center both received an ENERGY STAR label for performing within the top 25 percent for energy efficiency of similar facilities nationwide, while simultaneously adhering to strict performance levels set by the EPA. Buildings eligible for ENERGY STAR certification are ranked on a scale of one to 100, and buildings must score a 75 or higher to qualify. On average, ENERGY STAR buildings use 35 percent less energy than typical buildings, and release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Milford City Hall has reduced its site energy from 1,417 million British Thermal Units (MMBTU) in 2012 to 806 MMBTU in 2016- a 43 percent decrease. When compared to the national median, City Hall uses 51 percent less energy than a typical administration building. Annual electricity usage at City Hall has decreased by 43 percent since 2012, and is accompanied by a 43 percent reduction in annual energy costs resulting in a yearly savings of nearly $22,000. Additionally, the building produces 58 fewer metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions each year.
Parson’s Government Center has garnered a 10 percent decrease in site energy since 2012 resulting in a total of 43 percent less energy used when compared to a national median of typical administration buildings. Annual electricity usage has decreased from 1,166 megawatt-hours (MWh) in 2012 to 956 MWh in 2016, a reduction of 18%. This reduction generated a 31 percent decrease in annual energy costs which equates to roughly $100,000 saved per year. In addition, Parson’s Government Center now produces 171 fewer metric tons of GHG emissions annually.
“These drastic reductions were made possible thanks to a citywide commitment to manage energy strategically and make cost-effective improvements to buildings within the community, “ said Donna Wells, director of energy services at United Illuminating Company. “We are proud to have had the opportunity to work closely with Milford as they derived a strategy and showcased unwavering commitment in their quest to improve overall energy performance throughout the city.”
Milford has worked in conjunction with UI to utilize incentive money from the Energize Connecticut initiative, and on-bill municipal financing, to partake in several retrofit projects over the past few years.
