Overview
Hospitals, medical offices and skilled nursing facilities across the nation spend nearly $8.8 billion on energy to meet patient needs. Health care facilities are among the most energy-intensive facilities in the U.S. According to the 2003 Commercial Building Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS), the average hospital spends $675,000 on energy costs annually, exceeding the per-building energy costs of other building types by a factor of ten. To put that in context, the energy use intensity of hospitals is nearly three times that of a typical office building.
The Environmental Protection Agency reports that every dollar saved on energy is equivalent to a $20 increase in revenue for a hospital – or a $10 increase for a medical office building. Many organizations are reducing energy use by installing energy-efficient lighting, HVAC, chillers, water heating, refrigeration and kitchen equipment, as well as renewable energy systems. These facilities are reducing their operating costs, improving occupant and patient comfort, and decreasing their impact on the environment.
For-profit hospitals, medical offices and nursing homes can boost earnings per share by a penny by reducing energy costs just 5 percent1. Installing energy-improvements or implementing energy-saving practices can reduce energy use by 20 percent2.
Unlike many other commercial buildings, hospitals must remain fully operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week and provide services during power outages, natural disasters and other events that would force other facilities to close. By reducing energy load through energy efficiency, hospitals can reduce emergency generator use during disasters and other emergencies on top of reducing costs.
